How to Sleep When One Partner's Sweating and the Other is Shivering

Couple sleeps while struggling with being too hot and too cold

Your sleep is important; you know this! That is why it is so frustrating that your partner makes it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. When you have one hot sleeper and one cold sleeper in the same bed, it can feel like one of you is destined to sleep poorly. It doesn’t have to be this way!

City Mattress has anything and everything you need to sleep great. This extends to you even if you’re sharing a bed with a partner who has different sleep needs than you. It’s nothing our Sleep Experts cannot handle!

Understanding Temperature and How it Affects Sleep

A hot sleeper is no stranger to sleep struggles. Restlessness and an endless night of tossing and turning is many times the result of being too hot. Ideally, your room should be dark, comfortably cool, and quiet when you sleep. On the other hand, some have the opposite problem and wake up because they get too cold. Scientists and researchers have said that the ideal temperature for falling asleep is in the mid- 60 degrees, anywhere between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. You should find the temperature that works best for you. This means one that is cool enough to help you fall asleep without waking up a few hours later freezing while also not being so warm as to cause you to wake up from sweating.

A Few Sleep Essentials that can Help

What if two partners can’t agree? You may think that if one partner is a hot sleeper and the other is a cold sleeper there must be two different solutions, but this is not always the case. The key here is to find a way for you both to be comfortable.

Switch to two Twin XL mattresses

The mattress you are sleeping on matters for temperature regulation. With the vast selection of brands that City Mattress carries, there are many different mattress options for temperature regulation. One we encourage you to pay special attention to is the Tempur-Pedic brand. It is well known for its ability to keep you cool. In fact, a Tempur-Pedic LuxeBreeze mattress keeps you up to eight degrees cooler throughout the night! Maximum airflow is provided from the Tempur CM Comfort layer. The support layer has Ventilated Tempur-APR – Advanced pressure relief, a new breakthrough technology. The SmartClimate Max Dual Cover System has a zippered, removable and washable cover that is double cool to the touch. This mattress has four levels of Breeze Technology enabling you to sleep cooler and spend time in Deep Sleep, no matter what the temperature is outside. This is the dream of anyone who is a hot sleeper!

You may be thinking, “Wait- what about the cold sleeper? If they’re already cold, then surely a cooling mattress will make it worse!” What if we told you that you and your bed partner don’t need to be sleeping on the same mattress at all? A King size bed can actually be made from two Twin XL mattresses, instead of one King size mattress. This way, one sleeper has the cooling mattress they need and the other sleeper can have literally any other kind of mattress they want!

Consider a weighted blanket

Did you know that a weighted blanket will keep you extra warm if you are a cold sleeper? By nature, weighted blankets can be warmer than regular blankets. They are a lot thicker than normal ones and contain more weight. It makes sense that a weighted blanket would keep you warmer than something like a thin throw blanket you keep on the sofa. We carry weighted blankets from top brands, like Hush Blankets, Malouf, and Beautyrest. The key is to find a weighted blanket that keeps the cold sleeper toasty, without bothering the hot sleeper. This can easily be done by selecting a smaller size, so it covers only half the bed.

Sleep under a down comforter

You want to use bedding and linens that are seasonally appropriate. While you may think of a down comforter as something really big and fluffy, and therefore very warm, this is not the case. Down comforters are perfect in this situation as the natural down and cotton are both warm and breathable. The cold sleeper will have ample warmth to snooze comfortably, and for the hot sleeper, their body heat doesn't get trapped beneath the covers.

Opt for bamboo sheets

Also, you will want to opt for more breathable fibers, like bamboo, when choosing your bed linens. Not only does bamboo keep you at the perfect temperature all night, but it's also moisture-wicking. If the hot sleeper does find themself sweating, the sheets will pull the moisture away from your body and dry it really quickly.

If anything is stopping you from getting the good night of sleep you need to stay healthy and happy; you should fix the problem as soon as possible. This means finding the temperature that works best for both of you. You need your bedroom to be cool enough to help both people fall asleep without the cold sleeper waking up a few hours later freezing, while also not being so warm as to cause the hot sleeper to wake up sweating. Both a hot sleeper and a cold sleeper should be able to make it work by compromising on the temperature and adding a few sleep essentials to the mix.

It’s worth noting that if you have the square footage in your home to do so, you may also want to consider separate bedrooms. This is one of the best pieces of expert advice given to couples when one sleeper snores, and it extends to those in your situation as well.
