Expert Advice on Choosing the Best Foundation for Your Mattress

Mattress Foundation

You put a lot of thought into your new mattress. After all, you wanted the best. When you purchased a mattress from us here at City Mattress, that is exactly what you got! But what is your mattress resting on? Your mattress’s foundation matters much more than you may realize and choosing a good foundation is important. For this reason, we want to talk to you today about your foundation options. Most mattresses don’t automatically come with a foundation, so you do have an option as to which one you’ll get. Don’t assume you need to pair it with what the manufacturer makes to match with it.

We all want great sleep. You need more than a comfortable mattress to sleep well, though. Just like your mattress, the design and materials of your foundation are absolutely crucial to how you feel, as well as how long your sleep system stays top-quality. The purpose of these products is actually threefold: (1) to make  it easier to climb in and out of bed, (2) to absorb shock and reduce wear to the mattress, and (3) to create a flat and firm structure for the mattress to lie upon.

Some options offer more benefits than others. There is also aesthetics to consider. What style are you going for in your bedroom? With all of this in mind, we encourage you to consider these four options you may not have thought of:

Adjustable bed base

Wouldn’t it be great if your foundation could do more than just lie there? When you’re looking for the most benefits possible, begin your search with an adjustable bed base. Raising your head, legs, or both is incredibly beneficial for a multitude of health issues, from Restless Legs Syndrome, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Insomnia, and more. Plus, even if you don’t have an underlying health issue, they are incredibly comfortable. Raising your torso makes it easier to watch TV and read in bed.

Whether you have physical aches or simply an anxious mind, this provides the comfort you need for a better sleep experience. We carry adjustable beds from PranaSleep, Sealy, Serta, Tempur-Pedic, and our very own City Mattress brand.

Euroslat

This option is manufactured by famed luxury mattress maker PranaSleep. The slats in a EuroSlat Foundation are hard beechwood imported from Germany and secured in rubber couplets that are designed to pivot side to side and head to toe, contouring to your natural body curves. They are designed to move under your body as you slumber, offering more pressure relief than a mattress alone can provide.

The flexibility a PranaSleep EuroSlat Foundation provides means that you will experience less pressure to your shoulders and hips. The flexing of the slats helps these "hot spots" of the body and reduces pressure to create greater blood flow. All of this serves to reduce tossing and turning and allows you to stay in a deeper level of sleep. As your mattress ages, you can slide the slats to keep the firmness level and support you like. Opting for a PranaSleep EuroSlat Foundation over a traditional foundation gives you a significant advantage in your mattress’s  comfort, support, and longevity!

Low profile

You want the support of a foundation, without looking bulky or over-sized. Our low profile foundations give you this option. The City Mattress Arches Foundation, Simmons Beautyrest Foundation, and Sealy Kenaston Foundation all come with a low profile option. This means the foundation is only 6 inches, rather than the traditional 9 inches. Some people choose this for aesthetic purposes, while others simply have an easier time getting into bed when it’s closer to the ground. After all, some of our mattresses are quite thick and can be difficult for senior citizens to climb onto when paired with a further 9 inches of foundation.

Bunkie board

Bunkie boards work like a foundation, but much thinner. They’re ideal to pair with Scandinavian and contemporary furniture. If you love a sleek, modern look, this is the way to go. They are made to work along with bed slats and can help prevent sagging and reduce wear on your mattress, even though they are only a few inches thick. Just because they are thin, don’t be worried that they are cheaply-made products. They are upholstered in a skid-resistant cover and constructed with a wood slat frame. We carry several great options, including those made by Sealy Posturepedic and Serta.

When you want the best sleep possible, you want to create the ideal sleep system. This means thinking hard about more than just the mattress. The foundation matters too!
